Unable to deal with her uncaring family, Cleo runs away to a deserted island in Canada where she hopes to prove herself. But when she finally decides to return home, her canoe has been destroyed, and she faces the ultimate challenge in surviving the Canadian winter.

Harry Mazer (1925 – 2016) was an American writer of books for children and young adults, acclaimed for his "realistic" novels. He has written twenty-two novels, including The Solid Gold Kid, The Island Keeper, Heroes Don't Run, and Snow Bound, which was adapted as an NBC after school special, as well as one work of poetry and a few short stories. Along with his wife, Norma Fox Mazer, Harry received an ALAN award in 2003 for outstanding contribution to adolescent literature.

This book is used and in excellent' condition. The book has no rips or tears. The inside pages are unmarked and crisp except where noted below. The binding is completely intact, strong and like new. The dust jacket is in very good condition, it has a tear on the bottom front cover. This is an ex-library book and has an acetate cover with library markings and a library stamp on the title page. There is no card holder on the back nor was any ever put there.

As New: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.
