Antique Salad Plate, Spode New Stone, Chinoiserie, Hand Painted, Museum Quality, Rare Find, Display Plate
A gorgeous antique salad plate by Spode New Stone. This is an early pattern called 'Ship'. This scene shows a woman and child walking from a building with a tall ship in the background. The edge consists of peonies and other flowers on a brown border. Around about 1820 Spode introduced a stone china recipe called 'New Stone' which is extremely strong and whose appearance resembled Chinese porcelains. While the Chinese pieces were hand-painted, the Spode items were first printed in outline and then colored in by hand, an obviously more efficient manufacturing process. While researching this beautiful plate I found that these are very rare. I found one in The Spode Museum Trust where it was dated as c. 1820. It has the Spode impressed mark which is one of the oldest. This plate would make a wonderful conversation piece. A great way to own a piece of the past and bring it into the present. A marvelous gift for a collector of antique and rare china.
As a fun thought, when this plate was made Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were still alive.
Size:
8 inches in diameter
The plate is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing. The design is still bright and crisp. This plate is approximately 200 years old.
