Hardcover Book, The Matchlock Gun, Walter D. Edmonds, Newbery Medal Winner, True Story, Young Adult, Illustrated, French and Indian War, Upstate New York
A wonderful young adult hardcover book called The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmonds and illustrated by Paul Lantz. The illustrations by Paul Lantz include double spreads in full color and decorative drawings and full pages in lithographic pencil.
This is a true story of how frontier settlers defended their homes, when the French whipped the Indians up to pillage, slaughter, and burn the scattered New York settlements. It's about how a brave woman planned so that her small son would make full use of the matchlock gun her forebearers had used in support of their liberty. This true story was handed down in a family who were descendants of these Dutch settlers in the Hudson Valley.
Walter "Wat" Dumaux Edmonds (1903 – 1998) was an American writer best known for historical novels. One of them, Drums Along the Mohawk (1936), was adapted as a Technicolor feature film in 1939, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert.
