Hardcover Book, The Trial of Dr. Adams, Sybille Bedford, Law, Trial, History, First American Edition, First Printing
A wonderful hardcover book entitled The Trial of Dr. Adams by Sybille Bedford.
It is a recreation of an actual 1957 trial which took place in London. The author sat in the press box during the trial and created this book as a commentary on English and American law. The book gives one the feeling of the examinations, the witnesses, the atmosphere of the spectators, and the attitude of the judge, the prosecution and the defense. This is not a full transcript, but a telling, often tense, realization of how hard it is to establish a fact, any fact, unequivocally. Here is the accused, Dr. John Adams, being tried for the murder of Mrs. Morell (after rumors connected with other mysterious deaths) six years previously. Then come the nurses in attendance on Mrs. Morell, next the doctors in the hands of the prosecution. The defense takes over the cross-examination and, after the closing speeches, the Judge sums it up. With a sensitivity for the expertness, the procedures, the surrounding, international gallery of reporters, the play of tactics from lure to pounce, the pervasive point of a medical man using his profession and skill to kill a victim -- this is courtroom drama that implants actual testimony, question and answer, to implement an overall finding that truth, in a court of law, is limited.
Sybille Bedford, OBE (1911 – 2006) was a German-born English writer of non-fiction and semi-autobiographical fiction books.
