Step back in time with this 1957 first edition of "The Tichborne Claimant: A Victorian Mystery" by Douglas Woodruff, an enthralling account of one of the most famous legal cases of the Victorian era. This hardcover book, complete with its dust jacket, delves into the sensational true crime story of the Tichborne Claimant – a case that captivated England with its intrigue, drama, and exploration of identity and class.
This book is a detailed account of one of the most famous legal cases of the Victorian era. The book covers the story of the Tichborne Claimant, a man who claimed to be Sir Roger Tichborne, the heir to a wealthy English family who had been presumed dead for years.
The case became a sensational legal battle in the 19th century, as the claimant, a butcher from Wagga Wagga, Australia named Arthur Orton (though he also went by the name Thomas Castro), was accused of impersonating the real Roger Tichborne. Despite lacking many of the physical characteristics of the missing heir, the claimant managed to convince many people, including Lady Tichborne, Roger's mother, of his identity. The case is notable not only for its intrigue and drama but also for its examination of class and identity in Victorian society. It involved numerous court trials, including one of the longest civil trials in British history, and later a criminal trial where the claimant was convicted of perjury. Douglas Woodruff, a British journalist, and editor, approached the case with a thorough examination of the facts, characters, and social context surrounding the mystery. His book remains a compelling historical account of one of the era's most peculiar and celebrated legal dramas.
