If you have wondered what they had to put out a fire with in the old days here is your answer. A fire extinguisher made of a glass bottle filled with sulphuric acid was invented. It was intended to be hurled at the base of a fire. When the bottle broke the acid vaporized and extinguished the flames by chemical reaction. This was suitable for liquid and electrical fires and the extinguishers were fitted to motor vehicles for the next 60 years. They were called fire grenades.

Fire grenades originated in England during the late 18th century. The fire grenade was a bottle made of thin and very fragile glass designed to be thrown on the fire. The grenades could be found in homes, hotels, factories, schools, trains and other commercial buildings around the turn of the century.

Alanson Crane was granted the first American patent for a fire grenade around 1870 and glass fire grenades became popular in the United States. These bottles were used until around 1910 when they were gradually replaced by the metal fire extinguisher we know today.
