A hardcover book entitled Ordeal of the Union: Fruits of Manifest Destiny 1847 - 1852. The cover boards are red with gold title on the spine. This is the first volume of an eight-volume set. This is a study of how and why the Civil War came about. This is an ex-library book.
Ordeal of the Union, Is an eight-volume set (published 1947–1971) on the American Civil War by Allan Nevins, is one of the author's greatest works, ending only with his death. The individual books are:
Fruits of Manifest Destiny, 1847–1852
A House Dividing, 1852–1857
Douglas, Buchanan, and Party Chaos, 1857–1859
Prologue to Civil War, 1859–1861
The Improvised War, 1861–1862
War Becomes Revolution, 1862–1863
The Organized War, 1863–1864
The Organized War to Victory, 1864–1865
For the last two volumes, published in 1971, Nevins won the U.S. National Book Award in History
Joseph Allan Nevins (1890 – 1971) was an American historian and journalist, known for his extensive work on the history of the Civil War and his biographies of such figures as Grover Cleveland, Hamilton Fish, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockefeller, as well as his public service.

This book is in Used but in Near Fine condition. The book has no rips or tears. The inside pages are clean and completely unmarked. The binding is completely intact, strong and like new. The front and back cover boards have no staining and are like new. The pages are only lightly foxed (yellowed) but crisp. The book has its dust cover wrapped in plastic and also in fine condition. The dust cover is glued to the inside cover boards.

As New: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.
Fine: A Fine book approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. The book may have been opened and read, but there are no defects to the book, jacket or pages.
Very Good: Describes a book that shows some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects should be noted by the seller.
