A charming set of five antique bone dishes by Carlsbad China. The dishes are crescent-shaped to fit next to a dinner plate. The pattern is floral and the edges of the dishes are embossed. These are great side dishes and have lots of versatility. They would make a great side, sauce, dessert, nut, candy, trinket, jewelry, or even soap dishes.
Bone dishes were considered a necessary part of a Victorian table setting. The crescent-shaped dish was kept at the edge of the dinner plate so the bones removed from fish or meat could be placed in them.
Carlsbad is a mark used on china made by several factories in Germany, Austria, and Bavaria. Many pieces were exported to the United States. Many of the pieces are biscuit jars, bowls, plates, and platters from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Carlsbad is a city in Czechoslovakia, home to the factories that made the exported porcelain.

These bone dishes are in excellent condition. Three have no chips, cracks, or crazing. The other two have no cracks or crazing but do have a chip on the foot of the bowl. The chip on one of the bowls happened during the manufacturing process and is glazed over, the other bowl's chip is not. These do not take away from the bowls as they cannot be seen from the top. The condition of these is amazing considering that they are approximately 130 years old.
These would be a fantastic gift for a wedding, holiday, or special occasion. A great gift idea for a collector of antique china.
