A butter pat is a piece of butter formed into a ball or other ornamental shape for table use or an individual square cut from a quarter-pound stick of commercial butter.

These plates are also known as butter chips, butter pats, butter pads, and butters, they are generally three-inch diameter plates that are often mistaken for mere decorative items or for pieces from children's toy sets. Made for holding individual servings of butter, the butter pat reached its zenith during the Victorian era when ornate elegance dictated that every place setting at the dining table consist of several dishes for different foods. As a necessary part of a complete set of fine china, butter pats were crafted with the same attention to detail, and by the turn of the century, they were being made in an array of designs and patterns. They were round, square, fan-shaped, shell-shaped. They were decorated with fish, fowl, and floral motifs. They were miniature works of art.

Boote was founded by Thomas and Richard Boote in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in 1842. The company made pavement tiles, Parian ware, and earthenware. It began making white graniteware for export to the United States in 1888. Production was limited to tiles after 1906. T. & R. Boote used a boat as part of its mark from 1890 to 1906.

Size:
3¼ inches in diameter

These plates are in very good antique condition. There are no chips or cracks. They all have varying amounts of crazing from heavy to minor and rubbing to the gold trim. They have only light utensil marks. These are approximately 130 years old.
