1961 Children's Hardcover Book, The Hole in the Tree, Fiction, Weekly Reader Book, Collectible, Illustrated, Nature, Animals, Environment

A wonderful children's hardcover book called The Hole in the Tree by Jean George. The illustrations are done by the author. The book has gray cover boards with the title in blue on the front cover and spine. It has its dust cover as well.

This book tells the story of how a hole came to be in an apple tree. What started out as a hole made by a bark beetle grew into a larger hole as time passed, as other wildlife creatures enlarged it to fit their needs until Scot and Paula who were siblings were able to look through the hole. The subtle act of nature is described in a scientifically accurate approach.

Jean Carolyn Craighead George (1919 – 2012) was an American writer of more than one hundred books for children and young adults, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and Newbery runner-up My Side of the Mountain. Common themes in George's works are the environment and the natural world. Besides children's fiction, she wrote at least two guides about cooking with wild foods and one autobiography published 30 years before her death, Journey Inward. For her lifetime contribution as a children's writer, she was U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1964.

Good: Describes the average used book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects should be noted by the seller.
